A Fairy Tale Come to Life
Imagine a place where black bears amble along the shoreline, steep evergreen forests rise out of dramatic fjords, eagles and blue herons fly high above orcas and sea lions, and the colour of the water changes with Mother Nature’s every mood – from deep blue to misty grey to shimmering emerald green. Silhouetted against the sky, towering snow-clad peaks plummet to the water’s edge in a jumble of small islands, inlets, bays, and coves.
Welcome to British Columbia’s Desolation Sound in the outer Discovery Islands, a fairy tale come to life.
Desolation Sound, BC
Desolation Sound, a remote family of tiny islands and passages that attract boat and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world, is located at the northern end of BC’s Sunshine Coast.
The rugged terrain has impeded road access, so the Sound is only accessible by boat from Lund or Powell River on the mainland, or from Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island, Heriot Bay on Quadra Island, and Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
It may be secluded, but this is part of what makes Desolation Sound so special. Another part of its appeal lies in the over 60 km of remote shoreline, ideal for tranquil exploration, abundant fishing and prawning, and simple peace and quiet.
Refuge Cove on West Redonda Island, BC
Like the other islands and coves of the outer Discovery Islands, Refuge Cove is situated between the mainland and Vancouver Island, approximately 150 km Northwest of Vancouver.
Refuge Cove is a year-round community, home to about 20 families during the warm summer months and only a handful of residents during the off season. Only a 2 minute boat ride or 10 minute kayak from your accommodations at Cove Time Retreat, Refuge Cove offers a wide range of services, including moorage, groceries, laundry, fuel, coffee, burgers, and more. Given its central location, it is a popular rest and supply stop for boaters traveling in or near Desolation Sound.
Most of the services are seasonal, operating from June through September. During the rest of the year, the general store and fuel docks are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
