Things to Do in the Discovery Islands
As you can well imagine in an area as spectacular as BC’s Discovery Islands, this wilderness playground is a mecca for outdoor adventures, recreational activities, and exploratory excursions.
Hiking, sea kayaking, and sport fishing are some of the more popular activities you can enjoy during your stay in Desolation Sound, but wildlife viewing, boating, swimming, snorkelling, diving, and shelling are just some of the other well-liked things you can do while you are here.
Things to Do At the Cottage
Practice your dive or perfect your cannonball, right off the dock in front of the cabin. Exceptional swimming is available in warm, clean ocean waters. Who needs a tub when you’ve got the ocean at your doorstep? You might also try dropping a line for small perch.
Once you’ve finished splashing around in the water, explore the small pebbly beach nearby, searching the tide pools for hidden creatures. You can also marvel at old growth forest and stunning ocean vistas on one of the many excellent hiking trails that surround the property.
Still have some energy to spare? Grab one of the cottage’s complimentary kayaks and quietly paddle through a maze of channels, islets, coves, and beaches. If you go far enough, you can even see pictographs on Bishop Point in Waddington Channel.
Finish off each day with some locally caught oysters, a fire by the water, and a brilliant sunset.
Nearby Activities & Attractions
Though small, West Redonda Island and its neighbouring islands offer a surprising number of provincial parks, fresh-water lakes, cascading waterfalls, sandy and pebbly beaches, and serene forests.
Bring a picnic and spend an afternoon swimming in one of the warm lakes, find a shady refuge in lush, forested hiking trails, or power through a growing network of mountain biking trails and old logging roads on nearby islands.
Like to see who you share the water with? Fertile marine gardens flourish in these waters, and colourful intertidal marine life, such as Giant Sunflower Stars, Red Sea Urchins, and prickly-looking Sea Cucumbers, beckon divers and snorkelers to underwater depths for up-close-and-personal encounters. Bundle up and prepare to be amazed!
Top-side, cruise to serene anchorages and hot salmon fishing spots, or zip across the water in search of whales and sea lions.
Tour operators on the larger islands, such as Quadra Island, Campbell River on Vancouver Island, and the coastal ports on BC’s mainland offer a wide range of guided tours and equipment rentals – from fishing charters and whale watching tours, to bike and kayak rentals.
